ATLANTA – International soccer star Mia Hamm, a three-time Olympian and Gold Medalist in the 1996 Atlanta Olympics, thrilled an audience comprised of students and invited guests at the 8th annual Celebration of Girls’ Education.
The evening brought together the school’s benefactors, supporters, and event sponsors for this principal fund-raising effort for the Atlanta Girls’ School. Co-chaired by Dorsey Alston’s own Anne Hassett and Sandy Snead, they treated everyone to an elegant evening with an elaborate cocktail buffet, a silent auction, and a private “Conversation with Mia Hamm” arranged just for an audience of students.
Mia Hamm, one of People magazine’s “50 Most Beautiful People” and all-time leading soccer scorer in the game’s history, mingled with guests. Acclaimed artist Steve Penley created an original painting of Ms. Hamm, which he donated to the silent auction. The soccer legend and 1999 World Cup Champion spent time chatting with guests throughout the evening including Shepard and Boyce Ansley, Mark West and his daughter Eliza, Atlanta Girl’s School Head Joan Countryman, Board of Trustees Chair Anne Skae, Brooke Weinmann, Sally McDaniel, Valerie and Jody Abstance, Anne Morgan and Jim Kelly and Betsy Crawford and was certainly “friendly and gracious”.
The presenting sponsor of the event was BNY Mellon, accompanied by Platinum sponsor Tiffany & Co., Gold sponsor The Home Depot, and Silver sponsors Atlanta Woman magazine, The Coca-Cola Company, Arnall Golden Gregory law firm, and SunTrust.
Joining Anne Hassett and Sandy Snead in orchestrating the successful event were Steering Committee members Joan King, Amy Conlee, Elizabeth Rockhill, Petra White, Suzanne Sammons, Anne Hendry, and Ann Pequigney. Honorary Co-chairs were Cy Strickler and Donna Orender. The Atlanta Girls’ School offers a challenging college preparatory program in a learning environment designed to foster the full potential of each student and enable her to become a vital contributor to global society. The school includes grades 6-12.
